Man jailed 17 months after attacking four people in separate incidents

SINGAPORE – A 42-year-old man was jailed for 17 months on Monday (May 15) after assaulting four people including two of his then-girlfriends.

Redzuan Pupon pleaded guilty to two counts of causing grievous hurt and one count of causing hurt.

Three charges involving one Ms Brenda Loo Hwee Ling, whom he assaulted thrice between June 19 and 21 last year, were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Redzuan attacked his first victim, Ms Mardiana Yusoff, on Feb 20, last year.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Jocelyn Teo said they were in a relationship and had a dispute in an Ang Mo Kio flat at around 8am that day. Court papers did not reveal the reason behind the tiff.

Redzuan slapped her cheeks and kicked her limbs multiple times when she fell onto the floor.

Ms Mardiana, 35, made a police report about 12 hours later and was taken to Changi General Hospital (CGH) where she was found with injuries including a fracture on her left forearm.

She had to undergo surgery and was discharged on March 9, last year.

Redzuan was in a relationship with Norhatika Abdul Rahim, 17, about two months later and they were in his rented room at Lorong 22 Geylang when he flew into a rage .

At around 2am on May 3, last year, he confronted Mr Rahimi Ab Rahim, 47, who had rented a room nearby, and accused him of sleeping with Norhatika.

When the older man denied doing so, Redzuan slashed his face with a penknife before punching him several times.

Mr Rahimi managed to run away when Norhatika stepped in. He made a police report and was taken to CGH where he was found to have sustained several injuries including facial wounds and a broken nose.

Furious with Norhatika for stopping the assault, Redzuan pulled her hair and punched her face, mouth and head several times before leaving the premises.

She went to one of her neighbours for help and the police were notified.

The teenager was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where she was found to have multiple bruises on her face and thighs.

In his mitigation, Redzuan’s lawyer, Mr Gino Hardial Singh told District Judge Mathew Joseph that his client’s offences were not premeditated.

Mr Singh also told the judge that upon his release, Redzuan will seek treatment to address his anger management issues.

For causing grievous hurt, he could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined or caned for each charge.

And for causing hurt, he could have been jailed up to two years and fined up to $5,000.
