Fewer people are applying for free legal services for those who can’t afford lawyers in criminal cases. The number of applicants fell by a quarter between April 2019 and March 2020, compared with the same period a year ago. The Law Society Pro Bono Services, which runs the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, says recent changes to the law involving drug offenders are among the reasons for the drop.
